Health and wellbeing
Teatime to Dance
This is a new project currently in planning to start in January 2009 which aims to provide further opportunities for older 50+ residents and teenagers alike. Funded through Big Lottery wellbeing programme, we will be establishing a new dance group for older residents who will work on reminiscence-based projects which will be shared with our youth dance groups. This integrational project aims to improve physical and mental wellbeing for all participants and broker opportunities for young and old to participate in activity together.
Go Programme
Tandridge Leisure and Oxted School joined partnership in January 2008, to provide the 'Go Programme' to their female students. The school have been visiting Tandridge Leisure Centre on a weekly basis to promote further health and fitness opportunities for teenage girls.
Tandridge Leisure has run a very successful programme since starting and the girls attend during their PE lessons. The 'Go' programme educates the students on healthy living and why staying active is so important.
The 'Go' programme course is split in to two sections - a qualified aerobics instructor takes them through five different types of classes and a qualified fitness instructor teaches them how to to train safe and effectively within a gym environment. Several of our Go programme graduates are now members of our gym and attend our classes.
The health benefits of regular exercise
The benefits of regular exercise go far beyond losing weight. In addition to a good diet, it is a key part of keeping your body and mind healthy and free from illness. Exercise can do you good in more ways than you might think.
Exercise lowers your risk of heart disease
Your heart is a muscle and, like any other muscle, it needs regular exercise in order for it to pump blood around your body efficiently. Research has shown that people who have a physically active lifestyle are at approximately half the risk of heart disease as those who do not.
Exercise lowers your risk of many other major health conditions
Regular exercise can lower your blood pressure and your cholesterol level, as well as reducing the risks of stroke, diabetes, osteoporosis (thinning bones) and many types of cancer. It can also improve your digestion and posture and help with insomina (trouble sleeping).
Exercise helps you manage your weight
It almost goes without saying that exercise burns calories which can make you lose weight. If you are overweight, exercise will help you achieve your ideal weight. If you are already at your ideal weight, exercise will help you maintain it.
Exercise can help you live longer
As exercise improves your overall fitness and reduces your risk of developing many major diseases, regular physical activity can greatly improve your life expectancy. It can also give you a better quality of life in your later years by helping you stay active and social.
Exercise improves your mood
Exercise stimulates a chemical in your brain called serotonin which makes your feel happier and less stressed. Regular exercise can even help with the treatment of depression and anxiety.
Exercise provides natural pain relief
Being physically active triggers the release of endorphines which are anti-stress hormones that block pain signals in your brain. As a result, exercise can help to alleviate complaints such as back pain.
Exercise can improve your confidence
When you exercise regularly, your muscle definition is improved and your body fat is reduced. Even your skin is improved as more oxygen is delivered to your body tissue. All this can help to make you feel better about your appearance and improve your self confidence.
At Tandridge Leisure we offer a wide range of activities that can help you with a healthy lifestyle. Please spend some time viewing the website to help you with choosing the right type of activity to suit yourself or speak to one of our team at the centre of your choice.
